Colour: amber. Nose: it's very, very chocolatey, the peat only serving to reinforce this effect. It's like opening a family pack of Mars bars (like 5 kilos). Oops, I swear I just realized this was a very stupid - and very unintentional pun. There is also a bit of putty, ganache, smoke from dead leaves, soot... With water: the putty comes to the forefront. There seems to be some anti-rust paint as well. Palate (neat): it's a bit beastly, to be honest, the chocolate and a much more massive smoke than in the Tsunuki complementing a very majestic lemon. With water: a bit of a feeling of patchouli, geranium (in syrup), then raw cacao, ground coffee, green pepper, maybe a bit of juniper... Finish: long, a bit more peppery, leaning a bit towards bacon, walnut and bitter orange. A very oloroso side. Comment: I expected the bourbon version to dominate this one, but that was not the case. Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery have a range of Whiskies named Filey Bay named after the popular spot near the distillery where people go on holiday and pray that the one week of warm sunshine it receives falls during their visit. Now on the days its too cold, visitors to the beach can do a distillery tour instead...so the distillery is going to be busy. I read a review that this was non-chillfiltered (as is the case with all Adelphi bottlings) and that this is cask strength (which is usually the case with Adelphi also) but that seems unlikely as the whisky is young and at 48% it is quite low abv and a very common abv for bottlers to dilute whisky down too. Still need to confirm that this is cask strength. I did hear that North Star wait a bit longer now if a whisky is cask strength and exactly 46% because they did this once with a very old age statement whisky and nobody believed it was cask strength. Maybe this is just a case of a very unusual active cask that dropped to exactly 48%. Nose: it’s a leaner and straighter one, less of a fruit bomb than some other Glenugies. This one is rather all on straw, chalk, hay, minerals, wee coastal touches such as crushed shells and beach pebbles. Wet seaweed, swimming pools, sandalwood, cement and bath bombs. Some dried lavender, white flowers, ink and a soft, waxy hessian quality. Extremely pure, fresh and fragrant. With water: develops towards sunflower oil, toasted seeds, breads, sourdough - a good blanc du blanc Champagne. Mouth: limestone, putty, white pepper, beach sand, lemon jelly, lamp oil, mineral salts, waxed canvas and pear eau de vie. A really eloquent coastal theme running through this one. Hints of miso broth with dried seaweed, olive tapenade, dried rosemary, lanolin and carbolic soap. With water: a tad fruitier with tangerine, melon and apricot. Some cut green apple, more hay and straw notes and that nibble of white pepper is back. Finish: long, citric, precise and extremely fresh. Also rather mineral and chalky. Comments: Even stripped of much of its usual fruitiness, Glenugie is still such an impressive distillate. Purity and precision being the watchwords here. Fantastic mouthfeel - oily and unctuous it coats the mouth in deliciousness.
