Remnant Black Spot X Sherry Cask 43.5%abv 30ml

This whisky was distilled at Nant. It is a no age statement whisky but it is apparently one of the oldest casks matured for 10-12 years exclusively in a Sherry Cask. Nant had an infamous barrel investment scheme which burnt a lot of investors that in some cases bought casks that didn't exist. In the case of this cask - at some point some of the whisky was stolen from this cask and it was topped up with water because when the whisky was taken out it was only 43.5%ABV. Now what is interesting is some of the whiskies that are low abv are the best from Nant because clearly somebody was taking whisky from some of the best casks. Also adding water to the cask and leaving it extracts some different water soluble congeners that can add to the flavour. This particular whisky had the lowest abv but was the fastest Remnant to sell out and Phil Collidge the Director of Remnant said in a tasting at the Elysian that the sherry cask Black Spot X with the blue wax was his favourite out of all the casks in the warehouse - it was sold out at the time and wasn't in the tasting so he clearly wasn't trying to sell one to me - so kept my eyes open and I hunted down a bottle.

Official Tasting Notes:

Rich and balanced aromas of stone fruit, Medjool dates, and coconut meringue, with hints of vanilla and tropical papaya rounding out a wonderfully complex nose. The palate is sweet and viscous thanks to the tremendous fortified wine characters of poached stone fruits and cellared red wine. On the finish, complex oak flavours of crème caramel and chai spice begin to shine and draw the whisky back into balance.
