Godawan 02 Cherry Wood Cask Indian Single Malt Whisky 46%ABV 30ML
Godawan 02 Cherry Wood Cask Indian Single Malt Whisky 46%ABV 30ML
This is Diageo's latest foray into making luxury whisky in India. Distilled in Rajastan India using locally grown six-row barley this is whisky with an Indian twist. The whisky is matured in Cherry Wood Casks, finished in Bourbon casks and then the casks are emptied and the casks are rested, filled with water infused with botanicals / Ayurvedic herbs - Rasna (related to ginger) and Jatamansi and then emptied and refilled with the whisky for a final 2 month finish. Jatamansi or Spikenard is a root from the Himalayas which was particularly prized in Rome and Ancient Greece as a perfume and used to make spiced wine as it was fragrant and had anti-anxiety properties - it was also mentioned in the Bible - Mary Magdalene washed Jesus' feet with her hair, tears and perfumed Jatamansi oil at the house of Simon. The purpose of these infusions is more their fragrance and also they are reported to add a more buttery, silky mouthfeel.
Official Tasting Notes: Fruity, intensely spicy with creamy vanilla.
The Distillery is also the first in Asia to get various sustainability and eco-credentials such as water stewardship certification. The packaging was made with Indian paper from a supplier that became the first FSA paper manufacturer in India. The barley is aiming to gain organic certification and the local six row Indian variety used requires far less water than other varieties. Part of the profits go towards the preservation of the Godawan or India Bustard the national symbol of Rajastan and an endangered species with only 150 birds remaining in the wild.
