The Whisky

This powerful and highly anticipated release is the Lochlea Cask Strength Batch 3 Single Malt Scotch Whisky. As a farm to bottle distillery, Lochlea grows its own barley, making this a true testament to Lowland terroir. This batch is composed of Lochlea’s unique distillate matured in a precise combination of active First Fill ex-Bourbon Barrels and rich Oloroso ex-Sherry Butts. Bottled at a high natural Cask Strength of 59.8% alc/vol, this expression is non-chillfiltered and offers a bold, intense, and complex profile that showcases the quality of this young, burgeoning distillery. 

Our Tasting Notes

The nose is rich and immediately juicy, opening with notes of ripe red fruits, dark sugar, and a surprising hint of smoky bacon or savoury BBQ smoke. The palate is full bodied, chewy, and intensely warming, delivering dense layers of cherries and ripe berries, lifted by warming ginger cake, toasted rye, and dark molasses. The heat of the cask strength is remarkably well integrated, providing structure without excessive prickle. The finish is long, complex, and layered, weaving together baking spice, delicate salty smoke, oak tannins, and subtle floral hints of red roses.

This release was expertly handled by Master Blender Jill Boyd. Having honed her skills in the Scotch whisky industry with acclaimed blending houses, Jill Boyd is responsible for meticulously curating Lochlea's flavour profile. Her vision for the Cask Strength series was to push the boundaries of the distillery's spirit by expertly combining the deep richness of Oloroso sherry with the bold character of ex-Islay peated casks. The care taken in her selection ensures the resulting whisky maintains the spirit's signature Lowland elegance while embracing a complex, smoky structure.

The Lochlea Distillery

Lochlea Distillery is a relatively new but highly acclaimed Lowland distillery committed to the farm-to-bottle ethos. Located near Glasgow, the distillery exclusively grows its own barley on the surrounding farm—where Robert Burns once lived and worked—making it a deeply authentic expression of its local terroir. Lochlea uses a slow production process and long fermentation times to create a gentle, fruity, and highly textural spirit, which is rapidly gaining a reputation for excellence.
