Penderyn The Headliner Welsh Single Malt Whisky 46%ABV 30ml

Ninth in the Icon of Wales Series this whisky celebrates the Prime Minister of the UK Lloyd George who was a Welshman and was named in the headlines of British newspapers more than any other statesman in the 20th Century for his reforms and for being the war time Prime minister that led the Uk to victory in the First World War and introducing massive reforms such as the Old age pension, Health Insurance, social welfare payments. Also despite being a teetotaller he created the law that whisky had to be aged for 3 years and one day to combat cheap immature spirits. Lloyd George was a massive presence in UK politics who has been eclipsed by Winston Churchill a more colourful and charismatic statesman that came after Lloyd George.

This Penderyn was matured  in Jamaican Rum and Ruby Port Casks.

Official Tasting Notes

Nose: Lovely summer stone fruits – cherries, plumbs and peaches with a hint of tart pineapple. But there’s more than just fruit here – jube lollies, floral jasmine wafts and a hint of petrichor there as well.

Palate: Crispy clean mouthfeel, with just a hint of pepper. The sweet notes on the nose don’t really carry through here as promised – it’s quite a dry affair actually. There is sweetness at first, don’t get me wrong – but it’s soon overtaken by sharp, crunchy fruit notes (think granny smith apple) backed with mild tannin-astringency.

Finish: Lovely fruitiness with a sugar-gum sweetness comes through at the end but is given some pleasant edges by the white pepper notes. Crisp and clean spirit with a nice tartness that just begs to go around again as your noseing the next one.
