Cardhu 14y/o Special Release 2019 - 55.6% - 30ml / 50ml

This small batch of Cardhu has been double matured for two full years in Amontillado Sherry-seasoned hogsheads. Nice to taste Cardhu at cask strength as it allows the delicate more flowery and orchard fruit notes to be more easily discernible and shine, the core range is too easy drinking, light and bland.

Cardhu means Black Rock in Gaelic and is an interesting malt with a history of illegal distilling and unusual for the nineteenth century being mostly run by women Helen and Elizabeth Cumming for almost a 80 years during its most successful period. Enlightened women they even brought electricity to Speyside. In recent decades Cardhu has been mismanaged by Diageo who even released the misleading 'Cardhu pure malt' - which was actually a blend not a single malt from the distillery. Cardhu is still a best seller in Spain because its a light whisky, pleasant with ice in the hot weather. Hopefully, more special releases from Diageo can do more to showcase what is great about Cardhu,
