A rare whisky aged in a red wine barrel from Willowbank a New Zealand distillery which closed in 1997.

Tasting Note by Master of Malt

Nose Jammy stewed blackcurrants, freeze-dried raspberries, a hint of cigar box, and leather furniture, with a delicate dusting of baking spice.

Palate Robust notes of stewed red fruit, berry compote, dark cherry chocolate, and burnt sugar. Dried goji berries and a hint of woody rosemary, tannic oak spice, pepper, and old oak.

Finish Red fruits and drying oak linger in an almost Port-like fashion, joined by woody notes of clove and tobacco, berry shrub, cracked black pepper, and a touch of balsamic.

The Oamaruvian’s cousin

If you are expecting big bold red wine cask influence like its cousin the Oamaruvian, you won’t be disappointed. This one’s a little sweeter. The red fruit here is more jam, less fruit tea. It doesn’t have that mustiness that I associate with the Oamaruvian, which is a good thing, but comes with an acetone note that I didn’t enjoy. The alcohol also isn’t as well integrated as you would expect at 18 years. Absolutely one to try to try something different but not one I’ll go back to.
