Equipo Navazos 15y/o Single Cask - La Bota 104 Spanish Single Malt Whisky 46%ABV 30ml

"This is a malt whiskey that comes entirely from malted barley that was grown and subsequently distilled in Castilla la Vieja. It is a sister cask of the one bottled several years ago (Bota No.66). Its age is about 16 years, of which the last 12 were in a single vessel that previously housed an excellent old dry Oloroso. It is a unique spirit, since the bota from which it comes has been emptied entirely for this saca. It has not been cold filtered and, following an unbreakable rule for Equipo Navazos, has no aromatic additives, or sweetness or color or any other type."

Equipo Navazos are a maverick sherry bottler - Equipo or Team Navazos are a group of sherry maniacs and well known food and wine writers and connoisseurs that were aware that Sherry has become unfashionable and lots of small bodegas had amazing casks that were not being bottled and were too small in size to be commercially viable - so in 2005 they started hunting down these casks and independently bottled these old and unusual sherries from small bodegas and like SMWS started with whisky started sharing small batches amongst friend and gradually started to make artisanal sherry and other small batch Spanish spirits cool again. After these special casks were emptied they were worth a lot to Scottish whisky distilleries and reserved for the best single cask whiskies. However, since they were finding small batches of the oldest and best sherries what would happen if they made their own whisky in Spain and matured them in these casks to produce small quantities of exceptional sherry matured whisky. If a big proportion of the flavour is due to the quality of the cask it is no wonder that these Spanish whiskies are delightful and surprisingly good.
